J/111

JBoats Southwest will be hosting a J/111 meet and greet with Jeff Johnstone early March in the Kemah/Seabrook area. If you are interested in learning more about the design concept and the class rules contact me at: Scott@JBoatsSouthwest.com or 512-423-2179. Take a look at the New J/111 HERE

Key West Race Week Texans Do Well at Key West Race Week!
J/80 Key West

The J/80's stormed Key West this year with 23 on the line! Texas was well represented with the Rose and O'sullivan team on "Kicks" #17 taking a 9th and Glenn Darden and Reese Hillard on "LeTigre" #33 taking home the first place trophy! Jay Lutz also trailered his J/80 to KWRW for a Swedish team to use! Great job gentlemen!

Also in the J/80 class were three generations of Johnstones on Jeff Johnstones J/80 "Little Feat". Jeff's father Rodney called tactics and took care of boat set up and Jeff's daughter and her friend crewed, while Jeff drove. What a great experience! Oh and they took four first places, more then any other J/80 and ended up with a second overall. This is what it's all about-enjoy the video: Scuttlebutt - Key West 2010

Kristen Robinson, J/80 Class president, has written an article on 'How to do Key West Race Week on a Budget'. This may help those that want to plan for next year. The article is on the J/80 class site at: www.j80.org—j80usa. Also on the web site: The J/80 has been selected as the designated keel boat fleet by the Annapolis Yacht Club. The class keeps growing and has added another fleet (#17) in New York.

J/105 Key West

J/105 owners from Houston, Bill Zartler "Solaris" #4 and Bill Lakenmacher "Radiance" #12, drug their trusty steeds to Key West to race in the highly competitive J/105 class. Bill Zartler and his team sailed a consistent regatta, ending up in 5th place while Bill and his crew had a great 3rd race taking a 6th. Great first outing on their J/105!

While the Key West bunch were enjoying warm temperatures, fair winds, and great competition - We back in the southwest were enjoying great competition in harsh winds and frigid temperatures! The Icicle and Frostbite series kicked off at several clubs and were well attended!

The Galveston Bay Cruising Association (GBCA) has finished up their 5 race icicle series held in January. The series was won by Shelton and Liz sailing on their J/24 in the shorthanded division. Lots and Lots of pictures HERE

The Fort Worth Boat Club J/105's are getting it going! No race reports, but there are verified rumors that up to 7!!! J/105's are racing One Design every Sunday. This has prompted additional interest with one or two more J/105's expressing desire to come over and participate for the next several months! Way to go! Sounds like a lot of fun! The Dallas Corinthian Yacht Club are optimists calling their "Frostbite" the "Fair Weather Winter Series". JBoats were well represented with 3 J/105's and a J/29 taking part. Here's an excerpt from Jay Hoppenstein: "The wind had shifted to the south about 10 to 15 degrees and increased to a velocity of 15 to 16 knots as the clearer weather arrived from the west, turning the run into almost a reach. Cyrano (J/105) took advantage of both wind conditions and was able to pass Scoots to weather. On a puff, Cyrano jumped up on a plane, on which she remained till the finish. Even with boat speeds of 10.5 knots aboard Cyrano, Patterson could not be caught. The final standings among the J Boats was Cyrano, Scoots, David Butler and David Patterson."

AYC Frostbite

The Austin Yacht Club kicked off 2010 with the Annual Red Eye Regatta held on January 2. PHRF A Fleet was won by Ray Shull on his J/29 "Mostly Harmless". AYC's Frostbite Series is in full swing with 3 weekends of racing left. Both the J/22 and J/24 fleets are racing one design for this series getting 5 plus boats on the line. A-fleet is well represented with several J/80's, J/27's, and J/29's on the line! One might say the best thing about this Frostbite series is the hospitality crew! Racers are met back at the clubhouse with appetizers, a meal, and all the adult beverages you can drink---for $5.00 a head!

AYC is now on
