HYC One Design Regatta

As of this morning, September 13th, the HYC One Design Regatta has 88 boats signed up! The expectation is that the event will go over 100 boats!

This will be the first time in a LONG time that there has been a 100 + event in Texas! J/Sailors-sign up and be a part of what is shaping up to be a great Regatta! HYC has both cranes working. The weather looks to be breaking, with forecasted highs in the mid-80's! Ideal sailing conditions on the bay!

The Saturday social is not to be missed! Great food and beer on tap! Two tickets will be included in the skipper's packet and additional tickets are $13.  Music will be on hand.

Total J/Boat count thus far is at 39!

Currently the J/22's have 15 boats registered, followed by our re-energized J/80 fleet with 12, 8 J/24's and 4 J/105's.
If you're on the fence about this one-get off and come make history! We should be able to get 20 boats in each of the J/22, J/24, and J/80 fleets! But we need you! If your favorite owner cannot make the event-grab their boat and come! Let's show the Southwest and the nation that sailboat racing is alive and kicking!

Compass Regatta

Leave your Boat for the GBCA BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta Just Two Weeks Later!

by Jody Henry

This year marks the 27th year of the GBCA Bank Regatta, now sponsored by BBVA Compass Wealth Management Group and KO Sailing. It is GBCA's premier fall racing event and for 2011, we are very excited to welcome the Viper 640 fleet to the regatta. Due to the extreme drought in Texas, Lake Travis is considerably low right now so the Texas Viper Fleet has adopted the BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta as their October circuit stop. This is incredibly convenient considering that THIS weekend (September 18 and 19) is the HYC One Design Regatta that already has 19 Vipers registered AND HYC has agreed to let boat owner's leave their trailered boats over the 2 week time span between the OD Regatta and the BBVA Compass Regatta.

If you are a J-Boat Owner, or a Catalina 22 owner or a boat owner that lives on a lake in Texas that has no water, we encourage you to come to Galveston Bay and sail this weekend. Leave your boat for the GBCA Regatta on October 1 and 2. Yacht Clubs and Shipyard's are willing to accommodate extra boats due to the extreme conditions across the state. Just contact Dave Hampp for questions about HYC or contact Jody Henry for questions about Watergate YC. We have slips available for the Bank Regatta with power and water that are within stumbling distance from the tent.

The BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta starts Friday night at 7:00 PM, September 30 at the Skipper's meeting. This year, we'll have a large tent set up at Watergate Yachting Center and all events of the weekend will be under that tent. The tent will be located behind our clubhouse and next to the tennis courts. (1500 Marina Bay Drive) There will be access to public bathrooms and plenty of parking. Plus, as mentioned before, slips available to stay the weekend on your boat if interested. For Saturday racing, we will have 2 separate racing lines. The one-design line will be located near Red Bluff Point. (close to HYC) Right now, Vipers and Catalina 22's will be on this line. Any other one-design class that forms between now and September 30th will also be located there. The PRO is Marc Holdaway. The other line will be our PHRF Spin, Non-Spin and Cruising Class line. This race course will be closer to the Kemah channel and the PRO will be Jim Powers, the current Commodore of GBCA.

Compass Regatta

Saturday night, the party will be under the tent at Watergate YC. We will have the Flaming Patties Food Truck for dinner, a live band, a free rum bar with Mount Gay, Cruzan and Treaty Oak Rum, free keg beer, giveaways and a lot of fun and friendly people! GBCA parties have quite the reputation on the bay. We will not disappoint.

Sunday will include more racing followed by an Awards Ceremony at the tent. A $20 pass for the weekend will get you access to the parties and two passes will be included with your skipper's packet.

GBCA is excited to welcome all Texas boats to the BBVA Compass Performance Cup Regatta and we promise great racing and excellent shore events to make your trip worthwhile! See you on the bay!

JBoats Southwest Note: Great regatta for those J/Boat owners traveling to Texas for the HYC OD Regatta, Harvest Moon Regatta, and J/Fest. Four great events to chose from! Our J/111 "007" will be on mission for this!

JFest Southwest 2011

2ND ANNUAL J/FEST SOUTHWEST
LAKEWOOD YACHT CLUB
OCT. 29-30

JFest Southwest 2011

Lakewood Yacht Club (LYC) Race Committee Chairman Dwight Bengtson has announced that the club will be hosting its 2nd Annual J/Fest Southwest Regatta on Sat., Oct. 29 and Sun., Oct. 30. Open to the public, races will be held on Galveston Bay. The City of Seabrook is the Platinum Level Sponsor.

Last year was the inaugural run of a J/Fest Regatta in Texas, although such regattas have been held for over 25 years in Annapolis, San Diego, San Francisco, New Orleans and Seattle. “This will be another great opportunity for Lakewood to promote and support a national caliber event,” remarked Bengtson.

The focus of this J/Fest Southwest Regatta is to provide a venue that is all-inclusive to J/Boat owners, their family, and friends. While the racers are on the water, their spouses, children, family and friends can enjoy a myriad of activities and tourist attractions in the Bay Area Houston arena. Goodie bags for skippers will contain coupons for family fun. “Since Seabrook is the title sponsor for our regatta, we hope that visiting racers will book accommodations at our fine Seabrook motels,” added Rear Commodore Carl Drechsel who was instrumental last year in acquiring regatta support from the city’s hotel/motel tax marketing fund. J/Fest Southwest is inviting J/boat owners from all over the nation to bring their J/Boats to Seabrook and to participate in fall/winter sailing at J/Fest Southwest and other local regattas.

One design fleet slated for the J/Fest Southwest Regatta includes J/22, J/24, J/80, J/105 and the J/109. It will be a circuit stop for the J/24’s and the J/80’s. All J/Boats are welcome to race in the PHRF classes and in the J/Cruise class. Any J/Boat is eligible to participate and the regatta organizers intend to offer several exciting formats for the non One Design racers.
Let's keep the momentum going and sign up for J/Fest today! The earlier you sign up the more it will motivate others to come on down and participate in this event.
